Retired General Sejusa Calls Out Belgium’s Past Atrocities Amid Rwanda Diplomatic Fallout

Retired Major General David Sejusa has strongly criticized Belgium’s stance following Rwanda’s decision to sever diplomatic ties, questioning why the former colonial power still believes it can dictate terms to African nations.

Reacting to the development on X, Sejusa expressed frustration over what he sees as Africa’s continued weakness in the face of Western interference.

“Why does Belgium still think it can dictate to Rwanda the dos and don'ts? Whose fault is it? Africa’s? For exhibiting so much weakness and subervience, or Former Colonial Powers, stuck in the yester world?” he wrote.

His statement comes after Rwanda accused Belgium of actively working against its interests, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) conflict, and harboring groups that propagate genocide denial.

Kigali’s decision to cut diplomatic ties and expel Belgian diplomats has sparked heated discussions on Africa’s sovereignty and its relationship with former colonial rulers.

Sejusa further referenced Belgium’s brutal colonial past, particularly in the Congo, where atrocities such as beheadings and limb amputations were carried out with impunity.

“When they were beheading and cutting off limbs of Africans with no consequences? WHO?” he questioned.

He further suggested that the historical lack of accountability has emboldened Western nations to continue meddling in African affairs.

His remarks align with growing sentiments among African leaders and commentators who see Rwanda’s decision as a broader stand against neocolonialism and foreign interference in the region.
