Bobi Wine’s New Political Move Shakes Up Mpuuga’s Camp In Nyendo-Mukungwe

Mathias Mpuuga's political career is facing a major crisis after Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) endorsed lawyer Sam Muyizi to challenge him for the Nyendo-Mukungwe parliamentary seat in 2026. Since his fallout with Bobi Wine and expulsion from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Mpuuga has suffered multiple setbacks, including a humiliating experience at the burial of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya in Masaka.
Even with financial backing from Parliament and local security support, Mpuuga has struggled to maintain his political grip. His attempt to create a new political faction, the Democratic Alliance (DA), has largely failed, as many of his appointees distanced themselves, reaffirming their loyalty to NUP.
Even social media activists who once supported him have abandoned his cause, seeing no financial or political incentive to continue. His initial ambitions for the presidency now appear unrealistic, forcing him to focus on securing re-election as MP.
The political environment in Nyendo-Mukungwe has shifted significantly, making Mpuuga’s re-election difficult. A new wave of young, first-time voters is eager for change, questioning his continued leadership since 2011. Additionally, institutions that once backed him, including sections of the Catholic Church and Buganda Kingdom officials, now doubt his ability to counter Bobi Wine’s influence in Masaka.
Bobi Wine’s endorsement of Sam Muyizi has further weakened Mpuuga’s position. Muyizi, a respected lawyer from a prominent Masaka family, has strong ties to the Buganda Kingdom through his father, who served as the Pokino (Kabaka’s county chief) for Buddu.
He has also built credibility by representing opposition leaders like Dr. Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwago in major legal battles. His financial resources, experience, and grassroots support make him a formidable opponent.
Muyizi has already begun mobilizing support, working closely with NUP leaders such as Florence Namayanja. His campaign is gaining momentum, and with Bobi Wine’s backing, he poses a serious threat to Mpuuga’s re-election.
In response, Mpuuga’s supporters have resorted to smear tactics, including circulating a fake campaign poster falsely linking Muyizi’s wife, Olivia Mugabe, to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Olivia Mugabe, who previously ran for Bukoto West MP in 2021 as an independent with NUP leanings, remains committed to supporting her husband's campaign. These smear tactics mirror past attempts by Mpuuga’s allies to discredit other NUP figures, such as Joel Ssenyonyi and David Lewis Rubongoya, by falsely associating them with the NRM.
Despite these efforts, the political tide in Masaka appears to be turning against Mpuuga. With growing youth support for Bobi Wine and NUP’s structured campaign backing Muyizi, Mpuuga faces an uphill battle. As the 2026 elections approach, his political future looks more uncertain than ever.
