How Leaving Museveni’s Inner Circle Turned Out to Be a Game-Changer for This Top Retired Official
A retired Ugandan army officer who was once close to President Yoweri Museveni found a new and important job after leaving the government. Colonel (Retired) Fred Mwesigye, who was part of Uganda’s military and politics for many years, is now in a powerful position outside Museveni’s government.
Mwesigye was one of the soldiers who fought to bring Museveni to power. He later served in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and became a Member of Parliament for Nyabushozi County from 2016 to 2021. After leaving politics, many people were not sure what he would do next. Now, he has found a big opportunity in a different field.
After stepping away from Museveni’s government, he was appointed Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania in 2021.
This is an important job because Tanzania is one of Uganda’s key partners. In November 2023, he was also given another important role as Uganda’s High Commissioner to Malawi. He now represents Uganda in both countries and helps build strong ties between them.
Some people believe that leaving government actually gave Mwesigye a better position. As a diplomat, he now works with different countries to strengthen Uganda’s relationships. He has spoken about the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), saying it will help Uganda and Tanzania’s economies and create more jobs.
Many officials struggle to stay relevant after leaving Museveni’s government. But for Mwesigye, it has been a fresh start. Instead of losing influence, he now has an even bigger role in shaping Uganda’s future.
His journey shows that leaving government does not mean the end of success. For him, it was the beginning of something new. He moved from the army to politics, and now to diplomacy. His new job proves that power does not only come from working inside Museveni’s government. Sometimes, stepping away can open even bigger doors.
