He Was One Of Uganda’s Fearless Warrior The Untold Story of Major General Kasirye Ggwanga

Born on August 26, 1952, in Mubende District, Uganda, Major General Kasirye Ggwanga was more than just a military officer—he was a patriot, an environmentalist, and an unwavering advocate for the people.
His legacy remains deeply etched in Uganda’s history, defined by resilience, bravery, and an unrelenting commitment to the nation he served.
Ggwanga was born into a humble family, where his father worked as both a farmer and a hunter. This upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of self-reliance and a profound appreciation for nature.
He attended Katakala Primary School before proceeding to Kibuli Secondary School for his O-Level education.
In 1972, he enlisted in the Uganda Army, demonstrating exceptional skill and discipline. By 1979, he had risen to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
However, his career took an unexpected turn during the Uganda-Tanzania War when he was captured by the Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF).
Labeled as prisoner number 17341, he spent 897 days in captivity in both Tanzania and Uganda—a period that tested but never broke his spirit.
Upon his release in October 1981, Ggwanga joined the Uganda Freedom Army and later the National Resistance Army (NRA), playing a crucial role in Uganda’s liberation.
His military career saw him hold various key positions, including LC5 Chairman of Mubende District and Director of Stores in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).
Ggwanga was not only a soldier but also a fervent environmentalist. He frequently spoke out against deforestation and took direct action to protect Uganda’s natural resources.
His passion for conservation was evident in his personal initiatives, such as safeguarding forests and combating illegal logging.
Following his retirement from active military duty in 2018, Ggwanga retreated to his beloved farms in Mubende and Mukono, which he affectionately named "Camp David." There, he embraced a peaceful life, dedicated to farming and spending time with his family while continuing to champion environmental conservation.
On June 9, 2020, Uganda lost a national icon. Tributes poured in from all corners of the country, celebrating his military service, fearless advocacy, and charismatic personality.
Ggwanga’s legacy remains an inspiration, a reminder of the power of patriotism, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of what one believes in.
