NRM members push for new leadership as Baryomunsi defends CEC role

Aspirants for the NRM Vice Chairperson position for Western Uganda are pushing for new leadership in the ruling party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) as competition intensifies to unseat the incumbent, ICT Minister Chris Baryomunsi.
Among the prominent contenders is Igara East MP and PLU National Mobilizer Michael Maranga Mawanda, who has criticized Baryomunsi for failing to maintain a strong connection between party leadership and grassroots supporters.
Mawanda argues that his candidacy is aimed at bridging this gap.
“The current leadership has created a disconnect between CEC and party supporters in the region. I intend to ensure that our voices are heard and that the party remains grounded among the people,” he said.
Despite mounting pressure, Baryomunsi remains confident in his leadership.
“NRM is a democratic party, and competition is healthy. At the end of the day, the voters will decide who is best suited for this position,” he stated.
While some party members argue that Baryomunsi has not effectively engaged lower-tier cadres, the minister defended his record, emphasizing that CEC’s primary role is policy formulation.
“Our focus is on shaping national policies and guidelines. It’s not about individual gains but rather ensuring that the party remains strong and progressive at all levels,” he explained.
Other contenders are seeking endorsements from members of the Uganda Local Governments Association (ULGA) in Western Uganda, adding another layer of competition to the race.
“This is not just about individuals; it’s about the future of the party and the direction it takes in our region,” said one aspirant.
As the contest heats up, the question remains—can Baryomunsi withstand the pressure and retain his position, or will Mawanda and others succeed in their bid to unseat him in the upcoming CEC primaries?
