Makerere University Launches Phase 2 of Blended Learning Evaluation
Researchers at the College of Education and External Studies (CEES), Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, launched the second phase of the Comprehensive Evaluation of Blended Learning (CEBL) on January 13, 2024. Funded by the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF), the study will focus on evaluating blended learning among graduate students.
The first phase of the CEBL, which took place earlier, concentrated on undergraduate students. However, the researchers believe it is essential to extend the evaluation to graduate teaching, considering Makerere University’s shift to online teaching and learning in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Harriet Najjemba, one of the researchers, outlined the objectives of the second phase, including establishing the current blended learning status of postgraduate learners at Makerere University, documenting challenges faced by graduate learners, and modifying the framework based on phase one’s findings.
The study aims to assess the performance of emergency online and distance e-learning (ODEL) during the pandemic and incorporate the perspectives of learners who are the primary beneficiaries. The results are expected to influence policies on blended learning.
During the launch, Prof. Anthony Muwagga Mugagga, the Principal of CEES, highlighted the pivotal role of ICT in modern education. He emphasized the importance of incorporating blended learning to enhance educational quality and prepare students for the digital era. Prof. Mugagga expressed hope that the research findings would contribute to effective strategies for implementing blended learning not only at Makerere University but also beyond.
Dr. Eddy J. Walakira, representing the Chair of MakRIF, emphasized the significance of embracing technology in education. He commended the research team and expressed confidence in the program’s potential to drive innovation and make substantial contributions to the field. Dr. Walakira thanked the government of Uganda and MakRIF for their continued support of research and innovations.
The Director of the Institute of Open Distance and eLearning (IoDEL), Prof. Paul Muyinda Birevu, discussed Makerere University’s commitment to blended learning and smart education. The university aims to provide accessible and high-quality education through distance education programs, including the Master of Instructional Design and Technology.
The research team, led by Mr. Arthur Mugisha as the Principal Investigator, includes Dr. Harriet Najjemba, Prof. Paul Muyinda Birevu, Ms. Rose Akanya, Prof. Jessica Aguti, Mr. J Bateeze, and Dr. R Aine.
