I Have Served Enough, I’m Not Seeking Re-Election After This Term – Hon. Asuman Basalirwa

Bugiri Municipality MP and Justice Forum (JEEMA) party president Hon. Asuman Basalirwa has said he will not seek another term as the party’s leader.

Speaking openly about his time at the top, Basalirwa said he feels he has done his part and it is time for someone else to lead.

“I have served enough,” he said, adding that he is willing to take on other duties within the party if needed.

Basalirwa, who has been involved in politics for many years, also spoke about his time in Parliament. He said the work there was not entirely new to him, as he had earlier worked as an intern in the same institution.

That experience gave him a good understanding of how Parliament works before he became an MP.

He also shared his view on national issues, pointing to President Museveni’s unwillingness to take part in political dialogue through the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD).

“He opposed IPOD from the start, that’s why he never showed up for the meetings. He doesn’t believe in dialogue,” Basalirwa said.

On the Anti-Homosexuality Act, Basalirwa thanked Speaker Anita Among for the role she played. He said she stood firm during a time when there was strong outside pressure.

“I remember a moment in her office when a very prominent person came and said, ‘Let’s drop this law, it’s going to kill the country’s tourism.’ But she stood firm,” he said.

Basalirwa also noted the difficulties faced by the opposition in a Parliament where the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has the majority. He gave an example of the move to merge government agencies.

“We didn’t want certain agencies to be merged, but we lost that battle due to the NRM’s numbers,” he said.

He said he hopes to be remembered as a lawmaker who did his job well.

“I want to be remembered as an MP who made an impact, an impact tied directly to my core mandate as a representative of the people,” he said.
