Buganda Honours Pope Francis, Urges Leaders to Embrace Humility

The Buganda Kingdom has joined the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis, hailing him as a humble and compassionate spiritual leader whose example offers vital lessons for today’s leaders.
While receiving funds collected from counties including Buddu and Ssingo, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, urged Ugandan leaders to emulate the Pope’s humility and servant leadership.
“Pope Francis was a humble and caring leader. He showed the world that true leadership lies in service, not in commanding or intimidating those you lead,” Mayiga said.
Despite the early morning rain, loyal subjects from counties such as Kyaddondo, Buddu, Ssingo and Kyaggwe gathered at Bulange to present their oluwalo—part of Buganda’s long-standing tradition of collective contribution.
“We thank the people from Buddu, Kyaddondo, Ssingo, Kyaggwe and all other counties who raised a total of Shs 74,617,000,” Mayiga announced.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Katikkiro recalled the Pope’s 2015 visit to Uganda and his meeting with the Kabaka at the palace.
“That encounter between the Pope and our King is unforgettable. His words, his presence, and his spirit touched us deeply,” he said.
“The Pope held my hand as if he was the one most privileged to meet me—yet I was. I can never forget that level of humility,” he added.
Mayiga also issued a pointed caution to political leaders who govern through arrogance and disregard for the people they serve.
“Leadership is not about slapping people into submission. If you do not care about your subjects, they will not love you. You cannot force people to love you if you do not love and care for them,” he said.
“Love and humility build lasting relationships. Leaders must care for those they serve.”
Pope Francis’s message of compassion and his consistent advocacy for the oppressed continue to resonate in Uganda—especially among communities that saw in him a living example of the servant leadership Christ exemplified.
