Gen Muhoozi Vows: Kabila Will Never Be President of DRC Again, Gives This Reason

Political tensions over the leadership of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have flared once again after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba issued a strong statement on X, vowing that Joseph Kabila would never return to power.

Through his official page, Muhoozi wrote: "I will not let Joseph Kabila become a President of DRC again. You can forget about that."

In his message, Muhoozi – who is a Senior Presidential Advisor and son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni – accused Kabila of allowing the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorist group to operate freely in Eastern DRC for 17 years without decisive action.

"Kabila allowed ADF to subsist in Eastern DRC for 17 years. He never allowed us to take action against them. H.E. Tshisekedi is much better than him in that respect," Muhoozi stated, praising current DRC President Félix Tshisekedi for his better cooperation on security matters.

His remarks have sparked widespread debate across the region, with security analysts interpreting them as a firm indication of Uganda’s stance on the DRC’s political future and ongoing efforts to combat ADF terrorism, which has been linked to attacks throughout the Great Lakes region.

So far, there has been no official response from Joseph Kabila or the DRC government regarding Muhoozi's comments.

However, analysts warn that such strong statements could further inflame political tensions in a region already grappling with longstanding security challenges.

Joseph Kabila served as DRC’s president from 2001 to 2019 before handing over power to Félix Tshisekedi
