Kampala RCC Jane Muhindo Pays Tribute to Pope Francis

Kampala Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Jane Muhindo has paid tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, describing him as “a humble man of God” whose legacy of peace and compassion will continue to inspire generations across the African continent and beyond.

RCC Muhindo who is among the government officials who signed in the condolence book at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala recalled the Pope’s deep commitment to fostering peace in Africa, particularly highlighting a powerful moment in 2019 when the Holy Father knelt and kissed the feet of South Sudan’s rival leaders during a peace retreat at the Vatican.

“He was such a humble man of God. He was passionate about Africa’s peace,” Muhindo said.

“When he went on his knees and kissed the foot of the President of South Sudan, his gesture was a message of love, peace to the African people. May his good soul rest in peace.”

The act, which stunned the world at the time, was seen as a profound call for unity, forgiveness, and reconciliation in South Sudan, a country that has been plagued by years of conflict. Many African leaders and peace advocates have often cited that moment as a symbol of selfless diplomacy and moral courage.

Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. His death, occurring on one of the holiest days of the Christian calendar, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from religious and political leaders globally.

Known for his humility, simplicity, and strong advocacy for the marginalized, Pope Francis made several pastoral visits to Africa during his papacy, including trips to Kenya, Uganda, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Uganda, his 2015 visit remains vivid in the memory of many, as he honored the legacy of the Uganda Martyrs and called for the protection of family values and care for the poor.

RCC Muhindo urged Ugandans and all Africans to honor the Pope’s memory by embracing peace and dialogue.

“Let us walk in his footsteps. Let us remember that peace begins with humility, forgiveness, and love for one another,” she said.

As the Vatican prepares for a historic funeral that will draw millions of mourners, Pope Francis leaves behind a spiritual legacy deeply etched in the hearts of believers worldwide — one defined by courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human being.

Pope Francis is to be buried today, Saturday.
