Uganda Law Society Demands Justice for Eddie Mutwe After Reported Abduction and Torture

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has condemned the alleged abduction, secret detention, and torture of Eddie Mutwe, the chief bodyguard to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.
The ULS described Mutwe’s arrest on 27 April as unlawful and a troubling indication of how state power is increasingly used to target political opponents.
For several days, Mutwe’s whereabouts were unknown, and reports of torture have since emerged, raising concerns over human rights.
ULS Vice President Asiimwe Anthony referred to the incident as part of a broader crackdown on Ugandans seeking change.
He pointed out that this is not an isolated event but part of a pattern involving high-ranking officials in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The law society warned that the fusion of military authority with political intimidation poses a real threat to democracy and civil rights.
The ULS issued four key demands: the immediate and unconditional release of Eddie Mutwe and other political detainees, a transparent and independent investigation into the alleged abuses, an end to unlawful detentions and torture, and the protection of free speech in Uganda.
The group also appealed to the international community, urging action against those responsible. They called for targeted sanctions, diplomatic pressure, and greater support for human rights defenders within Uganda.
“Eddie Mutwe’s case is a symbol of the ongoing struggle for justice in Uganda,” Asiimwe said. “We will continue to mobilise legal and civic support until the truth is uncovered and accountability is ensured.”
