Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kampala Archdiocese has strongly condemned torture, illegal detention, and widespread human rights violations in Uganda, warning that no society can thrive while violating the dignity of its citizens.

He made the remarks on Sunday during the consecration of St. Bruno Serunkuma Catholic Church in Kasenge, now officially established as a sub-parish.

“Torture and unlawful detentions are against the fundamental rights of every human being and contradict the core values of our faith,” Archbishop Ssemogerere said during his homily.

“We must reject violence and promote justice if we want lasting peace.”

The celebration marked a historic moment for Christians in Kasenge and its seven surrounding outstations.

Previously served under the larger Kyengera, Nabingo, and Nakawuka sub-parishes, the faithful now have their own independent sub-parish within the Kampala Archdiocese.

The mass, presided over by Archbishop Ssemogerere, was filled with joy and spiritual renewal. It featured a solemn Eucharistic procession, lively praise and worship, and vibrant cultural displays of gratitude.

Rev Fr Pius Male, the chancellor of the Kampala Archdiocese, read the official decree establishing the new sub-parish, signed and sealed by the Archbishop.

In the same announcement, Rev. Fr. Steven Mayanja was appointed its first parish priest.

Fr. Mayanja expressed gratitude and pledged his commitment to the growth of the community.

“I promise to serve with humility, love, and commitment. Together, we will build a strong and united parish,” he said.

The Archbishop used the occasion not only to call for justice and peace but also to encourage Christians to take ownership of their new church, contribute to its development, and deepen their spiritual lives.

“True peace comes when we live the Gospel in our families, communities, and nation,” he said.

The celebration drew dignitaries from across the country, including representatives from the Buganda Kingdom, local leaders, and central government officials.

Their presence signalled a shared sense of pride and support for both the new church and the Archbishop’s message.

Paul Kato Setimba, head of the laity from the former Kyengera Parish, applauded the community’s resilience.

“This is a great milestone not only for the Catholic community but for the entire Kasenge area,” he said.

Several politicians echoed support for Archbishop Ssemogerere’s stand on human rights, praising the church for becoming a beacon of both spiritual and social transformation.

The consecration of St. Bruno Serunkuma Catholic Church is seen not only as a spiritual victory but also as a catalyst for development, unity, and civic engagement in the Kasenge area.

As the new sub-parish opens its doors, the Archbishop’s message resounds with urgency: justice, peace, and gospel values must guide Uganda’s future.
