China Railway 5 Engineering Group has signed a Shs 35 billion contract with the Mukono District Local Government to construct a 7.8-kilometre road connecting Ntenjeru to Bule landing site in Mukono District.

The road, which links the sub-counties of Ntenjeru and Mpata, has been in poor condition for years, prompting repeated outcries from residents.

The project will include tarmacking, improved drainage, the installation of street lights, and pedestrian walkways.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Mukono district headquarters, Mukono District Residential Representative (RDC), Fatuma Ndisaba said the new road answers long-standing calls from the community.

“This road has been a major concern for our people. With this investment, we are finally addressing a serious gap in infrastructure that has affected trade and mobility,” Ndisaba said.

A representative from China Railway 5 assured the public of timely and high-quality delivery of the project.

“We are committed to completing the work as scheduled, using quality materials and practices. We will employ local people, without discrimination, and ensure environmental safety throughout the construction process,” he said.

Mukono District Chairperson, Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, highlighted the project’s economic significance.

“The improved road will help farmers get their produce to markets in Gaba and Mukono more efficiently. This is a huge step in supporting our local economy,” Bakaluba said.

However, he also cautioned the contractors on their conduct in the community.

“Let us maintain discipline. We don’t want to see family breakdowns, unwanted pregnancies, or an increase in HIV infections because of irresponsible behavior from construction workers,” he warned.

Despite the optimism, Mukono Chief Administrative Officer Elizabeth Namanda raised concerns about unresolved land issues.

“We are experiencing delays in areas like Nakifuma where some people have refused to sign consent forms. A planned market has stalled due to land disputes caused by a local NRM leader,” Namanda said.

Monica Edemacu, Undersecretary at the Ministry for Kampala, advised the contractor to take precautions before starting work.

“Machinery must be thoroughly inspected before work begins to avoid the kind of accidents we’ve previously seen in Mukono Municipality,” she said.

Construction of the Ntenjeru–Bule road is expected to commence soon and is projected to greatly improve access, transport, and economic activity in the area.

The project is part of Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA-UDP) financed by a $566 million dollar loan from the international development association -IDE of the World Bank group, intended to upgrade 70 kilometer feeder roads in greater Kampala.
