Uganda Eyes Africa Olympics School Games Debut

Uganda is preparing to step onto the continental school sports stage, with plans to participate in the forthcoming Africa Olympics School Games.
The announcement came from Canon Duncan Mugumya, Clcommissioner for Physical Education and Sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports, during the closure of the 2025 USSSA National Ball Games 1 Championship held at Bukedea Comprehensive School.
“I have good news for you,” he told the crowd.
“Uganda is planning to take part in the Africa Olympics School Games, and we shall select teams from among you to represent the country. So I urge you to keep improving your game.”
Mugumya praised the tournament not only for the level of competition but also for its integrity, describing this year’s edition as markedly more professional than previous ones.
He noted a significant reduction in on-field misconduct and the presence of ineligible players, often referred to as mercenaries in school sports circles.
“In the past, we had incidents of coaches fighting on the pitch. This time, we’ve witnessed professionalism and maturity. And most importantly, we are winning the fight against mercenaries. I am now 95% sure that we are fielding genuine students,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
He also commended Speaker of Parliament Anita Among for her commitment to the development of sports in Bukedea.
The Commissioner described the Bukedea Comprehensive Stadium, which hosted both the current championship and last year’s FEASSA Games, as a national and international asset.
“This stadium is not just for Bukedea — it is a national treasure and an international asset,” he said.
The week-long championship featured spirited competition among schools from across the country, culminating in thrilling finals and medal ceremonies.
As the games drew to a close, Mugumya’s message to the young athletes was clear: those who work hard and play fair may soon find themselves representing Uganda on an even bigger stage.
With Uganda’s intended participation in the Africa Olympics School Games, the country's school sports system is set for a new chapter of exposure and achievement at continental level.
