Museveni Commissions Shs54bn USMID Road Project in Kasese Municipality

President Museveni has commissioned a 7-kilometre road network in Kasese Municipality, constructed under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program at a cost of Shs54 billion.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President described the newly built roads as a vital boost to business and tourism in the Rwenzori region.

He pledged continued government support for more road upgrades in the municipality.

"This is just the beginning. We are going to continue supporting Kasese Municipality to ensure all the roads are upgraded to improve business, tourism, and the daily life of the people," Museveni said.

The commissioned roads—Rwenzori Road, Margherita Road, Stanley Road, and Kitalikibi Road—form a critical network through Kasese town.

The upgrades include street lighting and drainage systems, which have improved mobility, sanitation, and public safety.

Mayor Chance Kahindo hailed the project’s role in urban transformation.

“These roads have uplifted the face of our town. They have not only improved the drainage system but also enhanced revenue collection and eased movement within the municipality,” he said.

Residents, too, voiced their appreciation. Ali Kusemererwa, a shopkeeper, said the new lighting and smooth roads have helped extend business hours.

"Before, our town was dark and unsafe at night. Now, with the streetlights and better roads, businesses are booming even after sunset," he said.

Rene Bwambale, another resident, praised the improvements in sanitation and flood control.

“The drainage channels have reduced flooding, and the streets are cleaner. We feel proud of our town again,” she said.

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Judith Nabakooba, noted that Kasese is among several municipalities benefiting from the World Bank-supported USMID programme, which seeks to enhance urban service delivery countrywide.

According to the Ministry, Kasese Municipality has so far received Shs54 billion for roads and other infrastructure under the initiative.

With Museveni’s promise of further funding, local leaders and residents expressed optimism that more roads would soon be rehabilitated, further positioning Kasese as a key urban centre in the Rwenzori region.
