A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer was abducted following a surprise armed ambush by suspected members of the Congo army in Deyi Subcounty, Pakwach District. The incident has sparked serious security concerns along the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border.

The attack took place as a group of UPDF personnel from Panyimur Town Council were returning from a routine patrol targeting illegal fishing operations in Kabolwa and Bugoigo areas.

The team, led by Corporal Ssemugenyi Paul, was ambushed near Deyi Landing Site by a heavily armed group of about eight assailants believed to be Congolese soldiers.

During the ambush, 24-year-old Private Chelimo Edwin, a resident of Deyi Parish in Deyi Subcounty, was forcefully taken by the assailants. Along with him, the attackers made off with his service weapon containing 120 rounds of ammunition, a boat, and an engine.

Following the incident, the suspects reportedly fled back across the border into the DRC with the abducted officer and the stolen equipment.

The case has been officially registered at Panyimur Police Station, and a joint investigation is underway to locate and rescue the abducted soldier. Security forces are also working to identify the attackers and ensure justice is served.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public, especially residents near the Uganda–DRC border, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

This latest cross-border incident underscores the fragile nature of security in the region. The UPDF and Ugandan Police have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
