Entebbe Warns of Travel Chaos Due to Mecca Pilgrimage

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a travel advisory warning all passengers departing through Entebbe International Airport of potential disruptions due to increased traffic during the Hajj pilgrimage season.
In a statement released ahead of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the CAA said: “Uganda Civil Aviation Authority informs all departing passengers that from May 19 to 29, 2025, a large number of pilgrims will be travelling to Mecca via Entebbe International Airport.
"The pilgrims are usually accompanied by well-wishers, which sometimes leads to traffic congestion.”
The advisory comes as Ugandan Muslims prepare for the sacred journey to Mecca, one of the five pillars of Islam. Each year, the number of pilgrims from Uganda continues to grow.
In 2023, about 1,300 Ugandan pilgrims traveled for Hajj, rising to approximately 1,600 in 2024. This year, officials estimate that between 1,800 and 2,000 pilgrims are expected to make the journey.
Most pilgrims depart Entebbe via connecting flights, typically routed through Addis Ababa, Doha, or Istanbul, with travel arrangements coordinated by licensed tour operators and the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
To minimise the risk of delays or missed flights, the aviation authority is urging all departing travelers—regardless of destination—to allow for sufficient time when heading to the airport.
“Passengers scheduled to depart during this period are advised to plan for adequate time to avoid the risk of missing their flights," Mr Vianney Luggya, the corporate and communication manager of the CAA, said.
"As a reminder, travellers are encouraged to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before their scheduled departure since most international airlines close check-in 1 hour before take-off."
Mr Luggya said Entebbe is expecting a significant increase in passenger numbers during the Hajj window, especially from group travel arrangements by various licensed tour operators.
This comes with an influx of accompanying family and friends, and we are doing everything possible to manage the flow efficiently.
"We urge the public to be patient and adhere to the guidelines in place to ensure a smooth experience for everyone using the airport," he said.
Special measures have been introduced to manage the large groups of pilgrims and accompanying individuals, who often arrive in buses and in celebratory processions.
“For pilgrims, a designated area has been reserved in the car park for them to gather and be taken through the modalities," the CAA added.
"Only vehicles with official access stickers will be allowed into the airport car park. Other accompanying persons will be directed to a designated holding area to manage congestion and ensure smooth operations for all users of the facilities."
Last year, Uganda Airlines offered special Hajj Pilgrimage package, flying some 500 Muslims to and from Medina.
However, there is no indication that a similar arrangement is on the cards this year. The Nile Post has contacted both the CAA and the national carrier for an update.
The advisory highlights the importance of cooperation and patience during what is traditionally one of the airport’s busiest times of the year.
With chartered flights and group departures expected to peak, officials are appealing to the public for understanding.
“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” CAA concluded.
As the Hajj period approaches, Entebbe International Airport remains a critical hub in facilitating the spiritual journey for thousands of Ugandan Muslims, with officials emphasizing early planning, adherence to guidelines, and mutual respect to ensure a safe and orderly travel experience for all.
