Chaos erupted at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court following dramatic arrests by plain-clothed operatives during a highly anticipated court session involving opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye's treason trial. The confusion began shortly after Besigye’s defense team, led by prominent lawyers Martha Karua and Erias Lukwago, addressed reporters outside the courthouse, criticizing the state’s handling of the politically sensitive case.

Tension escalated when two unidentified individuals were suddenly seized by men in plain clothes, causing panic among journalists, supporters, and bystanders gathered to follow the high-profile proceedings.

Eyewitnesses said the operatives appeared to target individuals filming or live-streaming the lawyers' press briefing, raising fears of an attempt to silence public scrutiny and intimidate the opposition.

The abrupt action disrupted the otherwise orderly court day, with many speculating the arrests were linked to increased surveillance and political pressure surrounding the case against Besigye.

Inside the courtroom, Grade One Magistrate Jonathan Tiyo presided in place of Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi, who was reportedly absent due to undisclosed reasons, prompting speculation and criticism.

Tiyo moved to adjourn the matter to May 29, 2025, citing pending disclosures and procedural delays, even as the defense protested what they described as deliberate judicial sluggishness.

Outside court, Karua condemned the arrests as a violation of civil liberties, urging authorities to uphold democratic principles and calling for international attention to Uganda’s deteriorating political climate.

With Besigye’s trial drawing intense public and media interest, the day’s events have reignited debate over state tactics, judicial independence, and the shrinking space for dssent in Uganda
