Seven MPs Join NUP in Major Opposition Shake-Up

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, the National Unity Platform (NUP) received a major political boost after seven Members of Parliament officially crossed over to the party.
The move was announced at NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, where party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, warmly welcomed the new members.
The defecting MPs, whose identities were not immediately disclosed in full, come from various constituencies and political backgrounds. Their shift signals growing support for NUP ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Bobi Wine praised the MPs for what he called a “bold and patriotic” decision to join the struggle for change. He urged other leaders to prioritize the will of the people over personal gain.
“This is not just about changing political parties. It’s about changing the direction of our country,” Kyagulanyi said during the event.
The MPs cited the need for transparency, accountability, and genuine leadership as reasons for their defection. Some also expressed frustration with their former parties, accusing them of losing touch with the public.
NUP supporters cheered the development, calling it a sign that momentum is shifting in their favor.
Political analysts say the move could reshape parliamentary dynamics and boost NUP’s influence in the legislature.
The ruling party is yet to comment on the defections, but the development is expected to trigger realignments across the political spectrum.
With elections approaching, the crossing of the seven MPs marks a significant moment in Uganda’s unfolding political season
