Court Grants Besigye, Lutale Access to Lawyers and Limited Family Visits

The Nakawa Chief Magistrates' Court has granted veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya permission to consult with their legal teams and receive visits from a select number of family members.
This decision comes as part of efforts to ensure the accused receive a fair trial and maintain their constitutional rights while in custody. The court emphasized the importance of legal access and family support in the pursuit of justice, particularly in high-profile and politically sensitive cases.
The two opposition figures, who face charges stemming from alleged attempts to incite public unrest, had petitioned the court for improved access, citing restrictions that were impeding proper case preparation.
Their legal teams welcomed the ruling, calling it a step toward transparency and due process. Rights groups have also applauded the court's move, viewing it as a critical safeguard in the ongoing legal proceedings in Uganda
