Paul Scholes believes that Ruben Amorim will make the major call to play one “really poor” Manchester United player in the 2025 Europa League final against Tottenham.

Ruben Amorim is now within touching distance of clinching his first piece of major silverware at Old Trafford since his arrival as Manchester United manager in 2024.

Manchester United are in the Europa League final and the Red Devils will meet Tottenham at the San Mames Stadium in Spain on Wednesday evening.

The Europa League is United’s last chance of ensuring Champions League football and their place in Europe for the 2025-26 campaign under manager Amorim.

United languish in 16th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are unable to secure European football through their current league campaign.

The Red Devils slipped to their 18th Premier League defeat of the 2024-25 season last Friday after United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

United have only managed 10 league wins from 37 matches and the Red Devils are winless in their last five Premier League matches ahead of the final.

Tottenham, much like United, have been in woeful form as well in the Premier League and Spurs are currently 17th and are one point behind the Red Devils.

Paul Scholes’ feelings on Man Utd striker Rasmus Hojlund ahead of the 2025 Europa League final match vs Tottenham

Paul Scholes singled out struggling Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund amid his poor run of form for the Red Devils in the 2024-25 campaign at Old Trafford.

Rasmus Hojlund has only netted four times in 31 Premier League matches and the 22-year-old Danish forward has struggled to be a consistent threat in the final third.

However, the Denmark international has been more reliable in the Europa League run and Hojlund has scored six times in only 14 matches for the Red Devils.

Ruben Amorim will be without United striker Joshua Zirkzee for the final due to injury and the former Sporting CP boss is tipped to play Hojlund as the lone striker.

Scholes has now admitted that Hojlund has “looked like a real threat” in the 2024-25 Europa League run, despite being “really poor” in the Premier League season.

Speaking in his TNT Sports column, he said: “I would try and start Amad and Garnacho in the final because they’re United’s two biggest goal threats, along with Bruno Fernandes.

“The best way might be to drop Fernandes back in the central midfield role alongside Casemiro, which has worked well in the past, especially in European games.

“I think Amorim will start Hojlund in the final because he hasn’t been too bad in the Europa League.

“He’s looked like a real threat and scored some important goals, but in the Premier League, he’s been really poor.”

Paul Scholes sees another option with Bruno Fernandes for Ruben Amorim going into the Europa League final vs Tottenham

Scholes said that Amorim could take a page out of the playbook of former United boss Erik ten Hag by deploying Bruno Fernandes as a false nine against Tottenham.

“If Amorim wanted to change things up, he could play Bruno Fernandes as a false nine just like Ten Hag did in last season’s FA Cup final win over City,” he continued.

“I know he’s tried Kobbie Mainoo in that position too, but I don’t think he’s suited to it and Fernandes is a bit more mobile.

“With Fernandes playing as a false centre-forward, you could also start with Casemiro and Ugarte in central midfield.

“There are plenty of selection dilemmas for Amorim, but I just hope he gets it right.

“The problem is the manager doesn’t know what he’s going to get from most of his players on the day.”

United and Tottenham will kick off their Europa League final showdown at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao at 8pm UK time on Wednesday evening
