Dr. Maggie Kigozi, an entrepreneur, former physician, and mother to rapper Navio, has opened up about how she managed to retain her house helper for more than three decades.

For 30 years, she has been with me. By that time, you know how important a house helper is, if you get a good one, treat her well.

Dr. Kigozi attributes the longevity of their relationship to empathy, understanding, and a commitment to treating her helper as part of the family.

She acknowledges that house helpers, like anyone else, can make mistakes, but stresses the importance of communication over dismissal.

Talk to them first and see if they can change. How I managed to keep her for 30 years? Well, she came from Rwanda and she had her problems there. At one point, she opened up to me, her husband wanted to take her child out of school because he couldn’t afford the fees.
I told her to bring all her children to Uganda, to me, and I’d take care of their education. They are now all graduated. They grew up with Navio and now are uncles and aunties to Navio’s kids.

Her sense of compassion extended beyond financial help. Dr. Kigozi revealed that she shared her home, her food, and her life with her house help.

She shares everything with us, same food, same shelter. That has been my policy until now.
