Deputy Chief Justice Flavian Zeija Appointed Austria’s Male Champion

Uganda’s Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, has been appointed as Austria’s Male Champion for the #WomenUganda2025 campaign a multi-stakeholder initiative dedicated to advancing gender equality in Uganda.
The campaign is spearheaded by female Heads of Diplomatic Missions from Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Austria, and key United Nations agencies including UNDP, UNFPA, and UN Women. It seeks to promote women’s rights by engaging male champions to advocate for gender-responsive policies and challenge harmful social norms.
Justice Zeija accepted the role during a meeting with Dr. Katja Yvonne Kerschbaumer, Head of the Austrian Embassy and Development Cooperation in Uganda. His appointment signals a strategic effort to bring influential male voices into the conversation on gender equality and institutional reform.
“I was pleased to meet with Hon. Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija to discuss #WomenUganda2025,” said Dr. Kerschbaumer. “His leadership and commitment to justice will be instrumental in pushing forward national efforts to create a more equitable society.”
As Austria’s Male Champion, Justice Zeija will support advocacy efforts aimed at transforming policy, influencing judicial processes, and promoting positive social change. His involvement highlights the important role that the judiciary can play in promoting inclusive governance and safeguarding human rights.
Austria and its partners will work closely with Justice Zeija to strengthen legal and policy frameworks, raise public awareness, and deepen the impact of the campaign across the country.
By stepping into this role, Justice Zeija joins a growing movement of male leaders who recognise that gender equality is a shared responsibility one that requires active engagement, institutional commitment, and collective leadership.
