Legends Rugby Grounds closes after 14 years

After 14 years at the heart of Uganda’s sports and entertainment scene, Legends Rugby Grounds, popularly known as Legends, has officially shut its doors.
The closure was confirmed in a public notice issued by management, citing the expiration of the venue’s lease on Plot 1 & 3 Sports Lane, Lugogo.
The lease had been held under Daniel Kaggwa, a member of Rhino Rugby Club.
The grounds have now reportedly been taken over by businessman Stanslas Isiagi, owner of the neighbouring Forest Mall.
According to sources, Isiagi quietly purchased the property last year for a reported $4 million (approximately Shs14 billion), though details of the deal have largely remained under wraps.
While there has been no official statement on future plans for the site, reports suggest Isiagi intends to redevelop the space into a hotel and swimming pool complex.
The announcement has marked the end of an era for one of Kampala’s most iconic venues.
“We are deeply grateful for 14 unforgettable years of sports, hospitality, and entertainment,” read the statement from Legends management.
“Your unwavering support has meant everything to us.”
Opened in 2010, Legends quickly became a key fixture in Kampala’s social and sporting landscape.
It hosted a wide array of events, from high-profile rugby matches and music festivals to public viewings and private celebrations.
It also played a vital role in the growth of rugby in Uganda, serving as home ground for leading clubs such as KCB Kobs, Panthers, Warriors and Rhinos.
The shutdown comes as a blow to the local sports community, which has relied on the facility not just for competitions but also as a social gathering space.
Throughout its 14 years of operation, the venue faced various challenges, particularly in recent years.
Mounting tax burdens led to a temporary closure by the Uganda Revenue Authority earlier this year, signalling ongoing financial strain.
The news of the closure has sparked widespread reaction on social media, with fans, athletes, and patrons sharing memories and paying tribute to the venue’s impact on Kampala’s cultural life.
In their farewell message, Legends management expressed hope for the future and gratitude to their supporters.
“We appreciate your support and will share updates on any future developments.”
“You are true Legends!” the notice concluded.
The development has sparked broader concerns about the long-term viability of major sports and entertainment facilities in Kampala, especially in light of increasing land pressure and shifting lease arrangements.
While its future remains uncertain, Legends Rugby Grounds leaves behind a rich legacy and a lasting imprint on Uganda’s sporting and social history.
