Speaker of Parliament Anita Among was swiftly defended by MPs and parliamentary officials after audio clips allegedly featuring her criticizing President Yoweri Museveni went viral online.

In the leaked audios, a woman sounding like Among is heard questioning Museveni’s apology to the Lango region, suggesting he should also apologize to Teso, Karamoja, and other marginalized areas for historical injustices.

The clips sparked a storm on social media, prompting Parliament to break its silence and dismiss the recordings as fake.

“We have been made aware of an audio clip circulating on social media, attributed to the Rt Hon. Speaker Anita Among.

The clip is fake and unfounded,” Parliament said in a statement. “We urge the public to disregard this fake content aimed to spread hate and misinformation.”

Chris Obore, Parliament’s Director of Communication and Public Affairs, accused political rivals of orchestrating the smear campaign.

He claimed the audio was designed to strain Among’s relationship with President Museveni, the NRM party chairman.

“The opponents are in panic and have resorted to smear campaigns,” Obore said. “They are attempting to antagonize AAA [Anita Annet Among] with the NRM chairman.”

Among recently announced her bid for NRM’s second national vice chairperson, a seat currently held by former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga urged caution, blaming artificial intelligence (AI) misuse.

“The audio is fabricated,” he said, adding that AI detection tools confirmed it as fake.

“This is a dangerous example of AI being used to deceive and manipulate,” Muganga warned.
