President Yoweri Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, arrived at the Anglican Martyrs Site in Namugongo today to participate in the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.

This annual event honors the 45 Christian converts—22 Catholic and 23 Anglican—who were executed between 1885 and 1887 for their faith under the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II.

The 2025 celebrations have drawn an estimated three million pilgrims from across Uganda and neighboring countries, making it one of the most attended in recent years.

Security has been significantly heightened in Namugongo ahead of President Museveni's attendance.

In his address, President Museveni urged Christians to balance their spiritual pursuits with socio-economic development.

He emphasized the importance of hard work and encouraged believers to engage in productive sectors such as agriculture, industry, and information technology to improve their livelihoods.

The First Lady, Janet Museveni, highlighted the role of education in fostering national development and moral uprightness.

She called upon religious institutions to collaborate with the government in promoting quality education and instilling values among the youth.

This year's celebrations are organized by the Northern Uganda Cluster, comprising six dioceses.

The event not only commemorates the sacrifices of the martyrs but also serves as a unifying occasion for Ugandans to reflect on their faith and national identity
