Kamuli District residents lined the main streets on Friday to receive the body of former district chairperson Charles Mugude, who died earlier this week in a road crash.

A brass band led the cortege from the town’s entrance to St Mark Church of Uganda, where Rev Moses Kasimizi, the Kamuli Archdeacon, celebrated a requiem service attended by political, religious and community leaders.

Rev Kasimizi praised Kuwembula’s “unwavering commitment to unity, service and development.”

Bugabula North MP John Teira, Kamuli Municipality MP Kayanga Baronda Watongola and other officials joined hundreds of mourners inside and outside the church.

Many described the deceased chairperson as a unifying figure who championed health, education and road projects during his four‑year tenure.

“It really hurts—Kamuli has lost a true pillar,” said Samuel Bamwole, former district NRM chairperson.

“His contribution to our development is undeniable, and his absence will be deeply felt.”

District Youth Councillor Noet Nangobi called Mugude “irreplaceable,” urging young leaders to emulate his humility and focus on service.

Twahir Waiswa of the National Unity Platform added that, despite political differences, Mugude “treated everyone with respect and brotherhood.”

After an overnight vigil at A‑Plus Funeral Services in Kampala, the body will remain in Kamuli until Sunday, when Mugude will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Buleeta village, Butansi Sub‑county.

Thousands—including top government officials, religious leaders and fellow district chairpersons—are expected to attend.

As the district prepares for his burial, residents remember Kuwembula as both a dedicated public servant and a compassionate community advocate—qualities they say will guide Kamuli beyond his passing.
