Over 1,500 Officers Registered as NIRA Wraps Up Weeklong National ID Exercise in Third UPDF Division

More than 1,500 UPDF officers have successfully registered for national identification as the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) concluded a weeklong exercise at the 3rd Infantry Division headquarters in Karamoja.
The exercise, which focused on renewals and new registrations, was part of NIRA’s ongoing mass ID registration campaign launched on May 28, 2025, and is scheduled to run for six months, with a possible extension.
According to Susan Talep NIRA’s regional coordinator, the process at the military base went smoothly, with no major challenges encountered.
“The officers were very cooperative, and the entire exercise was seamless,” Talep said.
Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of the 3rd Division, commended NIRA for taking the service directly to the forces.
“We appreciate NIRA for bringing this service closer to our forces. The UPDF remains committed to supporting all government programs,” he stated.
In addition to the UPDF, the week also saw successful registration of personnel from various institutions, including Prison Services, Police, Local Government, Media, Wazalendo, NSSF, telecom companies, Ministries, the Office of the Auditor General, and the Inspectorate of Government (IGG).
With institutional registration now complete in the region, NIRA will next roll out the mass ID registration to the general public.
The campaign aims to ensure universal access to national IDs, which are essential for accessing public services, voting, and financial transactions.
