A moment of comic relief unfolded during a press briefing when Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. General Kahinda Otafiire, gave an unexpected and fiery response to a journalist's question regarding vehicle number plates.
When asked to explain the government's position on recent controversies surrounding digital number plate tracking, Gen. Otafiire snapped, stating, “Number plate si kyange. That’s not my concern!” loosely translated as “That’s not my issue.”
His abrupt and dismissive answer drew immediate laughter from the gathered journalists, with some heard jokingly repeating the phrase, “tayagala kumanya” (he doesn’t want to know), a phrase now trending online.
The general, known for his no-nonsense approach, appeared visibly irritated by the line of questioning, possibly interpreting it as either irrelevant or provocative.
However, critics argue that as the Minister of Internal Affairs, the number plate system falls under his docket, and his remarks may reflect poorly on government accountability.
The viral exchange has since sparked mixed reactions among Ugandans, with some calling it humorous while others question the seriousness of leadership over matters of national security and public regulation
