Retired UPDF Captain Alex Opolot, a respected member of Uganda's military was one of the bodyguards of President Yoweri Museveni, though he sadly passed away on June 12, 2021.
Complications from COVID-19 caused his death. He passed away at Namugongo's Prime Hospital, leaving a legacy of bravery, commitment, and service.
Opolot was born in Bukedea District, Eastern Uganda, on January 21, 1962. His life was characterised by his undying dedication to the country.
He became one of President Museveni's initial protectors during the early years of his government after joining the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) early in his career.
During his 20 years of duty, Opolot took part in some of the most difficult military missions in Uganda.
He served as a peacekeeper in Somalia, where he was subjected to harsh and hazardous circumstances that tried his fortitude and improved his military intelligence proficiency.
Additionally, Opolot was a member of the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and participated in important missions in Northern Uganda, where he valiantly engaged the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).
His contemporaries respected and admired him for his contributions to these missions.
Opolot continued his commitment to security and protection after leaving active duty by working with Arrow Security Group under Captain Mike Mukula.
Opolot was well-known for his lively personality in addition to his professional accomplishments. Family and friends recall him as a dynamic dancer and a superb football player whose upbeat demeanour delighted everyone in his vicinity.
In spite of the difficulties he had while serving, he remained a loving husband and father to his wife and four kids.
