In a bold declaration signaling the end of an era, Uganda’s Minister for Internal Affairs, Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, has publicly announced he will not seek re-election after the year 2031. The long-serving minister made the revelation during a public address, emphasizing his belief in generational leadership transition.

“By 2031, I will be 80 and at that age, there are no new ideas I will be having to add on the nation, so I will voluntarily not seek re-election after 2031. This will be my last term,” Otafiire stated, underscoring his intention to retire from elective politics.

The minister, a veteran of Uganda’s revolutionary movement, said his decision was grounded in realism and a sense of national responsibility. He added that leadership should never become a life-long career but a chapter in a broader national service.

Otafiire’s announcement comes at a time when debates around political succession and leadership renewal continue to stir national conversation. He noted that Uganda's political future must be shaped by fresh minds and younger generations.

He reassured the public that his remaining years in service would be focused on consolidating peace, strengthening national institutions, and mentoring future leaders.

The minister also reflected on his decades-long political journey, marked by both military and civil leadership. He expressed gratitude to Ugandans for the trust they have placed in him.

“I have done my part. It is time others take the mantle,” he added.

Otafiire’s statement has drawn both admiration and surprise across political circles
