Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS and a well-known Ugandan activist, has strongly reacted to a recent comment made by President Yoweri Museveni.During a television appearance, Museveni reportedly described himself as a “modern-day king.” The statement has caused concern among many Ugandans, including Byanyima.

Speaking on NBS Television on Thursday morning, Byanyima called the president’s words “unfortunate” and asked why a leader of a democratic country would compare himself to a king.

“I heard President Museveni say that he is a modern-day king. I think that’s unfortunate,” Byanyima said.

“Why would you tell people in a country that believes in democracy that you are a king?”

Byanyima, who has spoken out many times against Museveni’s long stay in power, warned that such statements are dangerous to Uganda’s democratic future.

She said that calling yourself a king in a republic shows disrespect for democratic values and the rule of law.

“Uganda is a republic, and our leaders should reflect the principles of democracy, accountability, and respect for institutions,” she added.

President Museveni has been in power since 1986. Over the years, he has faced many criticisms from opposition leaders, civil society groups, and international organizations for staying in office too long and not allowing free political competition.

His latest remark, where he described himself as a “modern-day king,” has led to serious public debate. Some people believe he meant it symbolically, while others see it as a warning sign of growing authoritarianism.

Ugandans on social media and in political spaces have been asking whether this means Museveni now sees himself above the law.

Many have also questioned what this mindset could mean for Uganda’s future, especially ahead of the 2026 elections.

Byanyima reminded Ugandans that the country’s constitution does not allow for kingship in leadership.

“We chose democracy, not monarchy,” she said. “No one should be above the people, not even the president.”
