Speaking during an appearance on NBS Frontline, she clarified that the process for choosing the party's top leadership was open, transparent, and inclusive.

Kabanda stated that when the party called for expressions of interest for various leadership positions, the role of Party President was also among those advertised. She emphasized that the party did not block or discourage anyone from applying. According to her, the opportunity was there for any interested member to step forward.

She pointed out that, in the end, only Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, expressed interest in the party presidency. Kabanda questioned why critics would blame the party for lack of competition when other members chose not to contest.

Her remarks come amid public debates questioning whether Kyagulanyi’s position as NUP leader is truly backed by internal democracy or driven by personality politics. Kabanda insisted that the process followed the party’s constitution and that members had the freedom to run for any position, including that of president.

She urged those raising concerns to understand the procedures and participate actively in party affairs instead of criticizing from the sidelines. Kabanda also reaffirmed NUP’s commitment to building a democratic institution that values participation, fairness, and transparency.

Her comments are likely to shape ongoing discussions about political leadership and internal democracy within Uganda’s opposition parties
