Winnie Byanyima, the wife of jailed Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has come out to deny reports that she has been secretly trying to meet President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The reports claimed she had made efforts to talk to the President and even praised him. But Byanyima says that is not true.

Speaking in a calm but firm voice, Byanyima said,

"Dr. Kizza Besigye is in prison for political reasons. This is not the first time he has been arrested. I have tried to talk to President Museveni, but I have not succeeded."

She added, "My plea to President Yoweri Kaguta is to rise again. He can protect all that he did by handing over power peacefully. We don’t want to go back to 1980."

Her words show deep concern about the state of Uganda. She reminded people that her husband is not a criminal, but a political prisoner.

According to sources, Dr. Kizza Besigye and his colleague Haji Obeid Lutale were sent to Luzira Maximum Prison. They are accused of trying to overthrow the government, a charge known as treason. If found guilty, the punishment could be very serious.

Many people believe the charges are not fair. National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, said the government is targeting opposition leaders. In an interview, Bobi Wine said,

"This government fears the truth. They use prisons and charges to silence us. Besigye is just the latest victim."

Winnie Byanyima also made it clear that she is not trying to make a secret deal with the President. She said,

"I want to be clear. I am not begging for favors. I am demanding justice."

She continued, "It is wrong to jail people just because they have different views. Uganda should be a country where everyone can speak freely without fear."

This situation has caused many Ugandans to worry about their rights and the future of the country
