President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s government has extended the term of office for Local Council I (LC I) and Local Council II (LC II) Chairpersons and their committees for another six months.

Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi issued the notice of extension of the term of office for Local Council I (LC I) and Local Council II (LC II) Chairpersons and their committees days to the expiry date of the previous extension.

Issued in a gazette notice put out in December 2024, the extension was due to expire on June 28.

The new 180-day extension will now expire mid early year, after which another extension will replace it or elections will be held.

“Notice is hereby given to the general public, pursuant to Regulation 12(d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations, that the term of office for administrative unit councils expiring on 28th June 2025, is extended for a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty days from 29th June 2025,” the notice by My Minister Magyezi, which The Pearl Times has seen, read.

General Notice No. 2827 of 2024, under the provisions of Regulation 12 (d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations as stipulated in the Local Governments Act, Cap. 138, based on which the extension was made, means that the elections for LC One and Two Chairpersons and their committees could happen in 2026, the year of the general elections.

The Ministry of Local Government needs about Shs50bn to hold LC One and Two elections for about 10,595 parishes and 70,626 villages across the country
