A cloud of scandal hangs over Kamuli District after its senior engineer was arrested in connection with the disappearance of Shs1.3 billion meant for road rehabilitation projects. The arrest follows a probe by Uganda Police and district authorities into incomplete roadworks despite full fund disbursement. The missing funds were part of a government allocation to improve rural transport infrastructure. However, reports indicate several earmarked roads remain untouched or poorly done, raising questions over financial accountability.
According to police, the engineer failed to provide sufficient documentation to explain how the funds were utilized. Investigators also cited gross discrepancies between expenditure reports and actual field work.
District officials confirmed the arrest, adding that internal audits were already underway. The Local Government Ministry is expected to dispatch a technical team to conduct a full forensic review.
Residents, who have long suffered the effects of impassable roads, welcomed the arrest but demanded wider accountability. “We want roads, not excuses,” one resident said.
The arrest underscores growing national scrutiny over corruption in local infrastructure projects
