Residents of Nyombe Parish in Ndorwa County West caused a stir on Tuesday when they blocked a campaign convoy belonging to Minister David Bahati. The angry villagers tore down an old, broken bridge, stopping the minister from reaching his planned meetings in Butanda Sub-county.

Minister Bahati, who is in charge of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, was on a campaign tour. He was expected to speak to people in Hamuhambo and Kifurugutu villages.

However, things didn’t go as planned after residents took matters into their own hands.

The problem began with the Kabaya Bridge, which has been in bad shape for years.

This bridge, found near Kabaya Parents Primary School, connects several villages including Habuhinga and Kasiru.

Locals say the bridge is dangerous and has put school children and traders at risk for a long time.

Every election season, the minister has promised to fix the bridge. But according to the residents, nothing has ever been done.

“We are tired of hearing the same story,” one protester said.

“He comes here during elections, tells us the bridge will be repaired, and then disappears.”

Frustrated and feeling ignored, the community decided to block the road completely. By tearing down the bridge, they made sure the minister would not pass without noticing their anger.

Without a way to cross, Minister Bahati and his team had to turn around and find a longer, rougher route.

The unexpected disruption delayed their journey and drew more attention to the area’s poor roads and bridges.

Locals say their businesses are suffering. Farmers struggle to transport goods to the market.

Children walk dangerous paths to reach school. In short, life is harder because of the bad road and broken bridge.

Later, Minister Bahati spoke on local radio, asking for peace and patience. He promised that the government had not forgotten the community.

But people are not so sure anymore. Many say they will not be fooled again by sweet words and empty pledges.

The situation in Nyombe shows how broken promises can turn into public anger.
