Major General Benon Biraaro was one of the people who helped Museveni fight and win the bush war. He worked closely with Museveni during those hard years and even after Museveni became president, Biraaro continued to serve him in the army and at State House. He held high positions in the army and was trusted by many.

But as time went on, Biraaro started to feel unhappy with the way Museveni was running the country. He believed that things had gone wrong and that the government was no longer doing what they had fought for during the war. Because of this, Biraaro decided to retire from the army quietly and went to do his own things.

Later in 2016, Biraaro shocked many people when he decided to stand for president against Museveni. He formed his own political party and started moving around the country, telling people that Uganda needed change. He believed that Uganda needed new leadership and better plans to help farmers and poor people.

But his journey was not easy. People around him started receiving warnings. Some of his meetings were blocked. Some radio stations refused to host him. Others feared supporting him because they didn’t want to get into trouble. He faced a lot of pressure from all sides, even though he was peaceful and respectful.

As the pressure increased, Biraaro started going quiet. By the time the next election came, he was no longer active. He had stopped speaking out and was not seen at any big opposition events. Many people close to him believed he gave up because of the pressure he was facing. He didn’t want to bring problems to his family or himself.

In 2020, Biraaro died after suffering from cancer. He was remembered as a good man who wanted the best for his country. But many also remember how the system pushed him into silence. He tried to stand up and speak out, but the pressure from those in power became too much. In the end, he gave up the fight and quietly faded away.

His story is a sad one. He was a man who helped bring the current government to power, but later realized that the country had lost its way. He tried to correct things in a peaceful manner, but the system did not allow him to continue
