Police Arrest 16 Over Alleged Plot to Disrupt Museveni Nomination Event in Kampala

Security agencies in Uganda have confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals suspected of planning to disrupt activities in the capital during the official nomination of President Yoweri Museveni as the NRM Chairman and 2026 Presidential Flag bearer.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Uganda Police Force, the arrests were made on July 5, 2025, as President Museveni submitted his nomination forms to the NRM Electoral Commission at Kyadondo, Plot 13, in Kampala’s Nakasero II Parish.
"Security agencies conducted threat assessments and deployed accordingly, with foot and motorized patrols across the city. Undercover officers were positioned at key points, and a quick response team remained on standby," the police noted.
The 16 suspects were apprehended during the event on suspicion of plotting to disrupt city activities. Police say the individuals were found smoking opium and are now being held at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala.
Their case files are currently under preparation as investigations proceed.
Despite the arrests, authorities report that the event concluded without any major incident.
Intelligence operations are ongoing to ensure continued stability, especially in light of the political activities surrounding the NRM nomination process.
The police have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the country heads into the 2026 election season.
President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is seeking another term as both NRM Chairman and Uganda’s Head of State
