The National Unity Platform (NUP) has reported a strong start to its national fundraising campaign, collecting over Shs1.07 billion within the first two days. The funds are meant to support the party’s preparations for the 2026 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Speaking during a leadership graduation ceremony at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, the chairman of the fundraising committee, described the collections as a symbol of Ugandans’ growing belief in change and unity.

“On July 7, we launched our national fundraising drive under the Next Generation Campaign,” Balimwezo said.

“On the first day alone, we raised Shs135.8 million in cash, Shs21 million in checks, and received pledges worth Shs869.5 million—totaling Shs1.026 billion.”

He added that on the second day, the party collected an additional Shs21.2 million in cash and Shs19.7 million through mobile money, bringing the grand total to Shs1.07 billion.

The party has set a target of Shs9 billion, which it hopes to raise from supporters within Uganda and the diaspora. According to Balimwezo, this figure reflects both ambition and realism.

“This is not just about money. It’s about a movement. From market vendors to professionals, from youth to elders, Ugandans are giving what they can to support the struggle,” he said.

NUP Treasurer Benjamin Katana said the party’s campaign strategy is based on transparency and ethical politics, in contrast to the ruling party’s past spending habits.

“In 2021, the NRM reportedly spent Shs900 billion. Our target is just 1% of that,” Katana noted. “We don’t bribe voters or misuse funds. We believe in honest, people-driven politics.”

Katana explained that the funds would be used for essential campaign activities such as fuel, logistics, printing posters, and mobilizing communities.

NUP’s impressive start to its fundraising efforts highlights the party’s growing organizational strength and grassroots support.

As Uganda heads toward the 2026 elections, the opposition party says it is focused on building a clean, people-centered campaign.

“This is just the beginning,” Balimwezo said.

“The journey is long, but with unity and sacrifice, we shall achieve victory. Let us keep the fire burning.”
