Untold Story Of Explosive Leaked Audios Exposing Kizza Besigye Alleged Coup Plot Against Museveni

Dr. Kizza Besigye, former leader of Uganda’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), once faced serious allegations of plotting to overthrow President Museveni’s government.

The controversy began after leaked audio recordings allegedly captured him discussing plans to acquire weapons, drones, and foreign support for a rebellion.

According to Ugandan security agencies, the recordings suggested Besigye sought to exploit divisions within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Air Force. There were also claims of spreading counterfeit money to destabilize the economy and criticisms of fellow opposition leader Bobi Wine.

Additionally, reports suggested that meetings in Geneva, Athens, and Nairobi were held to secure external support, though these claims were never independently verified.

On November 16, 2024, Besigye and his associate, Haji Obeid Lutale, were arrested in Nairobi and charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Authorities alleged they were found with eight rounds of pistol ammunition and were planning military operations in Uganda.

The accusations sparked skepticism, with critics arguing it was a politically motivated attempt to discredit Besigye ahead of the 2026 elections. Uganda has a history of using legal charges to weaken opposition leaders, and many saw this as part of that pattern.

Besigye appeared before the General Military Court Martial on November 20, 2024, where he denied the charges. He objected to being tried in a military court as a civilian, but the proceedings continued.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, many questioned the authenticity of the leaked audios. Besigye’s supporters dismissed the case as a smear campaign, while government critics viewed it as another attempt to suppress dissent.
