UPDF Quietly Retires Top Officers in Sudden High-Level Exit

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially retired 149 senior officers under its 15th batch of organized retirement.
The retirement ceremony, held with full military honors, marked the end of an era for several high-ranking officers who have served the country for decades.
Speaking at the event, UPDF leadership commended the officers for their dedication, discipline, and selfless service in defending Uganda’s sovereignty and contributing to peace and security.
The retiring officers were urged to remain patriotic and to become positive ambassadors of the UPDF in civilian life.
“You are not leaving the force, you are simply changing uniform,” a UPDF representative stated. “Continue to uphold the values of the army wherever you go.”
Officials emphasized the importance of using retirement benefits wisely, advising the officers to invest in sustainable ventures that can support their families and communities.
They were also reminded of the army’s continuous readiness to engage them for national service when needed.
The retirees included colonels, lieutenant colonels, majors, and other senior ranks, representing various departments and units across the UPDF.
Many of the officers expressed gratitude for their time in service and promised to remain loyal to the ideals of the institution.
The retirement exercise is part of the UPDF’s broader restructuring and professionalization strategy, aimed at creating room for fresh recruits and adapting to emerging security needs.
The day closed with a symbolic farewell, marking both an end and a new beginning for the 149 officers
