Ugandan Businessman Arrested For Obtaining Over UGX 37 Million from US Citizen in Fake Gold Scam

Statehouse Anti-Corruption unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the director of Public prosecution arraigned Egesa Mackland, a businessman before the KCCA Grade 1 Magistrates' Court on charges of obtaining money by false pretense and conspiracy to defraud.

Between the months of February and June 2024, the accused allegedly conspired and defrauded an American investor of USD 105,000 by falsely claiming they would supply him with 20kgs of pure gold, which was not true.

He has been remanded till 23rd July 2025, He joins his co-accused Kizito Dalton who was earlier charged and remanded on similar charges.


This is happening at the same time when the President of Uganda, His Excellency, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has revealed intention to run for Presidency in the 2026 Presidential elections in Uganda.

The President who was speaking ahead of the General Elections, urged Ugandans to back him stating that he is going to wipe corruption Out of Uganda.

His son, Ugandas Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in a post on X formerly Twitter, revealed that the UPDF will be on the ground monitoring the situation during the General Elections.
