Chaos in Court: Judge Forgets to Sign Besigye’s Release Papers

There was drama at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after a judge reportedly forgot to sign a critical document that would have allowed the release of opposition leader.
Dr Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, were due to be released after a court ruling. However, when it was time to present the signed production warrant to prison officials, the court clerk realized that the judge had not signed the form.
This small but serious mistake caused confusion and frustration among the lawyers and supporters of Dr Besigye, who had been eagerly waiting for his release. Some were seen shaking their heads and whispering to one another as court staff rushed to correct the error.
“The paperwork must be complete for the release process to go smoothly,” said a legal officer at the scene who preferred to remain anonymous. “Any missing signature means the warrant is not valid.”
The situation drew attention from members of the media and supporters who had gathered outside the courtroom. Tension grew as many wondered whether the delay was accidental or intentional.
Eventually, the issue was resolved, but it pushed back the release by several hours. By late afternoon, the correct documents were signed and sent to the prison. Dr Besigye and Hajj Lutale were expected to be released by evening.
Dr Besigye, a former presidential candidate and long-time government critic, was arrested in June during a political event. His case has sparked debate about political freedom and legal processes in the country
