Former Member of Parliament for Mpigi District, Sarah Nakawunde Temulanda, has called on women, young mothers, and youth to embrace vocational training programs as a practical solution to unemployment in Uganda.

Temulanda made the remarks during a graduation ceremony where 42 women and girls received certificates in tailoring and hairdressing after being trained under Elsa Africa skilling programs.

The former legislator emphasised the critical role of hands-on skills in reducing the high unemployment rate among women and young people.

“Skilling is the only sustainable way to address youth and women unemployment. Empowering women to become economically independent translates into a stronger and more self-reliant Uganda,” Temulanda said.

Elsa Africa, a community-based organisation focused on vocational training and empowerment, has been offering free hands-on courses to underprivileged young women and mothers in Mpigi and surrounding areas.

The organisation’s director, Ddumba Lawrence, urged the government to collaborate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like Elsa Africa to scale up targeted skilling programs.

“We need to support and empower women because a skilled person can sustain themselves, overcome challenges, and contribute meaningfully to society,” Ddumba said.

He cited poverty, lack of skills, and unemployment as key drivers of unwanted pregnancies, gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS, child neglect, and discrimination against women—issues Elsa Africa seeks to address.

As part of the graduation, Movit Products Limited donated 30 startup kits to selected graduates, including essential tools and products to help them launch their own businesses.

A company representative noted that Movit’s support extends beyond Elsa Africa to other organisations across the country that are committed to empowering women and reducing poverty.

“We believe in investing in women. Empowering them economically is the first step toward transforming communities,” the representative said.
