From Brigadier to Major General: Museveni’s Surprise Move Shakes UPDF Ranks

In a significant military development, President Yoweri Museveni has promoted Brigadier Wilberforce Sserunkuma to the prestigious rank of Major General. The move comes as a recognition of his decades of unwavering service to Uganda and his vital role in promoting regional stability.The announcement was made through a radio message by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces. He praised Sserunkuma for his loyalty, dedication, and steady rise through the ranks of Uganda’s military structure.

Sserunkuma’s story is rooted in the early days of the National Resistance Army (NRA), the foundation of today’s Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). His transition from the NRA to UPDF symbolizes a life fully devoted to national duty.

Currently, Major General Sserunkuma commands the UPDF’s 3rd Infantry Division in Moroto. This strategic region, bordering Kenya, is key to Uganda’s border security and disarmament operations in the often-volatile Karamoja sub-region.

Under his leadership, the 3rd Division has played a central role in restoring calm and sustaining peace along Uganda’s eastern frontier. His hands-on approach has earned him respect from both the ranks and local communities.

Reacting to the promotion, Sserunkuma was deeply moved. “This recognition from the Commander-in-Chief means the world to me,” he said. “It belongs to all the officers and men who have stood by me throughout the journey.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to the UPDF’s core values—loyalty, discipline, and peace. His pledge to continue serving Uganda with integrity reflects the spirit of a soldier grounded in purpose.
