Bobi Sends a Strong Message to Traoré: Let the People Decide

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has urged Burkina Faso’s interim President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, to honour his original commitment to democratic elections. Wine made his remarks during an interview on the SMWX podcast in South Africa, where he advocated for people-powered leadership.

Wine praised Traoré’s popularity but emphasized that legitimacy must come from the people’s vote. “I am sure people love President Traoré,” Wine said. “So, it would be wonderful if he gave them a chance to elect him, so that they feel he is their servant, not their boss.”

Captain Traoré rose to power in a 2022 military coup, ousting former interim leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. At just 37 years old, Traoré is among the world’s youngest heads of state and has been known for his firm anti-colonial rhetoric and growing distance from French influence.

Initially, Traoré promised a return to civilian rule, setting July 2024 as the target date for democratic elections. However, that path now appears uncertain following recent political developments.

On July 17, 2025, the Burkinabè government dissolved the country’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), citing cost and redundancy. This unexpected move has sparked mixed reactions domestically and internationally.

Government officials defended the decision as a restructuring effort, while critics fear it signals democratic backsliding. Public consultations held in May 2024 already hinted at extending Traoré’s rule until 2029.

Wine’s appeal adds to growing calls for Traoré to recommit to democratic processes and timelines
