NUP Accuses NRM of Blocking Mobile Money Fundraiser Ahead of 2026 Polls

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has accused the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) of orchestrating the disconnection of its mobile money line meant for campaign fundraising ahead of the 2026 general elections. The opposition party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), said the move is a deliberate attempt to frustrate their financial mobilization efforts. NUP had recently launched the mobile money initiative to rally donations from supporters across the country.
According to NUP legal counsel George Musisi, the number was disconnected shortly after its launch, without any official communication or justification. “The NRM has never embraced multiparty democracy,” Musisi told Daily Express. “Shutting down our mobile money number is part of a broader strategy to cripple our campaigns.”
He emphasized that transparent fundraising enhances accountability, noting that members deserve to know how their contributions are spent—something NUP says it has always promoted.
Musisi accused President Museveni’s government of using state institutions to suppress opposition fundraising channels, creating an uneven political playing field ahead of the 2026 vote.
Despite the setback, NUP maintains that supporters have continued to donate through alternative means, including direct cash contributions at their Kavule-based headquarters.
The party views the interference as evidence of shrinking democratic space in Uganda, where opposition activities are increasingly met with administrative and financial hurdles.
NUP urged Ugandans to stay vigilant and committed to democratic change, vowing to continue their preparations with or without mobile money access
