Rejected by NRM, Mbatekamwa Bounces Back with Surprise Mbarara Mayor Bid

Igara West Member of Parliament, Mbatekamwa Gaffa Louis, has officially declared his intention to run for Mbarara City Mayor as an independent candidate. His announcement comes just weeks after he was denied the National Resistance Movement (NRM) nomination during the party’s primaries.
In a video shared by journalist Alex Mugasha, Mbatekamwa expressed disappointment with how the NRM handled the nomination process. He claimed the process was unfair and influenced by internal party politics, leaving him no choice but to contest independently.
Despite the setback, the MP said he remains committed to serving the people of Mbarara City. He promised a leadership style rooted in transparency, development, and inclusiveness. Mbatekamwa believes his experience as a legislator and his direct connection with the community put him in a strong position to lead the city.
The declaration has stirred excitement and debate among residents and political observers in Mbarara. Some believe his move could shake up the mayoral race, especially with his strong grassroots support in the region.
Mbatekamwa also called on his supporters to stay firm and focused, urging them to vote based on values and vision rather than party loyalty. He said Mbarara needs leaders who put people first, regardless of political affiliations.
The Mbarara City mayoral race is now expected to attract national attention as more candidates join the contest ahead of the 2026 general elections
