Tensions Rise as Kanyeihamba’s Kinsmen Protest Kampala Burial rather than his ancestral home

A growing wave of discontent has emerged among the kinsmen of former Supreme Court Judge Justice George Kanyeihamba following the announcement that he will be laid to rest in Kampala rather than his ancestral home in Kasese District.

The decision, reportedly made by the late judge’s immediate family, has sparked emotional responses from relatives and community elders who insist he should be buried among his ancestors.

Justice Kanyeihamba, a revered legal scholar, constitutional expert, and human rights advocate, passed away earlier this week at the age of 85.

Known for his vocal defense of the rule of law and democratic values, his death marks the end of an era in Uganda’s judicial and intellectual circles.

While preparations for a state-assisted burial are underway in Kampala, tensions have flared in Kasese’s Kyamuhunga Village, where many of Kanyeihamba’s extended family members and clan elders had anticipated hosting the burial.

They argue that, as a cultural leader and prominent son of the soil, his final resting place should be in the land of his forefathers.

“We are not opposed to national honors,” said Amos Bwambale, a senior clan elder. “But we are deeply disappointed that he will not return home for burial. It is a painful betrayal of our traditions.”

Other community members echoed similar sentiments, citing the importance of cultural rites and the symbolic value of burying elders within ancestral grounds.

“When one of our own passes, especially a man of his stature, he deserves to be brought back to the land that nurtured him,” said Beatrice Katusabe, a local teacher.

However, the late judge’s family in Kampala defended their decision, stating that Kanyeihamba had long established his life and work in the capital and had often expressed the wish to be buried there for reasons of accessibility and personal reflection.

They have appealed for calm and understanding during this emotionally charged period.

Government officials involved in the burial arrangements have acknowledged the tensions but urged unity and respect for the family’s wishes.

A national tribute is scheduled to be held at the High Court in Kampala before the final burial.

As Kasese mourns one of its most distinguished sons, the dispute over his burial site underscores the often delicate balance between national identity, personal wishes, and cultural traditions in Uganda.
